Instructor Training - Assessment Only
€200 - 300
1-day evaluation
For highly experienced instructors who want to validate their skills within the ISSA system.
- Join an instructor training (Day 1) or complete assessment during a school evaluation
- Demonstrate sailing skills, theoretical knowledge, and teaching ability
- Continuous evaluation by the trainer (final decision by lead trainer)
Important:
This pathway is designed only for instructors who already meet a high professional standard.
If the required level is not demonstrated:
- Upgrade to full training, or
- Join another instructor course
Assessment Only Pathway
The Assessment Only pathway is designed for highly experienced instructors who already have strong sailing background and teaching experience, and would like to validate their competencies within the ISSA system without completing the full training course.
This pathway is selective and intended for candidates who are already operating at instructor level.
Two formats are available:
1. Assessment during Instructor Training (Day 1)
Candidates may register for an assessment (€300) and join the first day of an instructor training course.
During this day:
- You will be introduced to ISSA standards, structure of courses, and teaching methodology
- You will participate in practical and theoretical sessions together with other instructor candidates
- You will be asked to demonstrate your sailing skills, decision-making, and safety awareness on the water
- You will also demonstrate your ability to explain key topics and conduct parts of a lesson
Assessment is continuous and based on:
- Practical sailing performance
- Understanding of theory and ability to explain it clearly
- Teaching style, communication, and group management
The trainer may also involve peer feedback from other candidates as part of the process.
Final certification decision is made solely by the lead trainer.
2. Assessment during School Evaluation
For instructors already working within a sailing school, assessment may be conducted during a school accreditation visit.
In this case:
- The instructor is evaluated in a real teaching environment
- Assessment is based on actual lessons, interaction with students, and course delivery
- The trainer evaluates both technical and instructional standards in real conditions
This format is typically used for instructors who are already part of an ISSA school or a school applying for ISSA accreditation.
Important considerations:
- Assessment Only is not a standard pathway and is not suitable for inexperienced candidates
- The expected level is high - candidates must demonstrate confidence, consistency, and independence as instructors
- Strong emphasis is placed not only on sailing skills, but also on teaching methodology and safety mindset
If the assessment is not successful:
- You may continue the instructor training course by upgrading your participation and paying the remaining course fee
- Alternatively, you may join another instructor training at a later date (full course fee applies)
This ensures that every candidate still has a clear pathway to certification.
