Instructor Training Program

The ISSA instructor training program is designed to prepare candidates for professional teaching in an international environment. It combines practical sailing, theoretical knowledge, and instructional methodology.

The program is suitable both for experienced sailors who want to become instructors and for instructors transitioning from other systems.

Training includes:

  • Development of practical sailing skills to instructor level
  • Refreshing and structuring theoretical knowledge
  • Learning how to teach effectively in a structured training environment
  • Understanding ISSA standards, safety requirements, and course progression
  • Practicing real teaching scenarios with feedback from trainers
Completion of the training does not automatically guarantee certification.
  • Deliver clear and structured briefings
  • Demonstrate maneuvers step-by-step
  • Manage groups with different skill levels
  • Provide constructive feedback to students
  • Ensure safety and risk awareness at all times

Certification approach

Completion of the training does not automatically guarantee certification.
At ISSA, the focus is on achieving a consistent and professional teaching standard. If a candidate does not yet meet the required level by the end of the course, additional development is provided.

Extended development pathway:

  • Candidates may be invited to join additional instructor training sessions
  • These sessions are typically provided without additional training fees
  • They are often combined with other instructor courses or ISSA events (such as instructor trainings, workshops, or festivals)
This allows candidates to continue developing in a real training environment, gain more experience, and refine their teaching approach.

Timeframe and expectations:

  • The development process depends on the candidate’s initial level
  • In some cases, certification may be achieved immediately after training
  • In other cases, additional practice and participation in further sessions may be required
  • The full process may take up to one year
This approach ensures that all certified instructors:
  • Have strong and consistent sailing skills
  • Fully understand the theoretical material
  • Are confident and effective in teaching
  • Can independently run courses to ISSA standards
The goal is not only to certify instructors, but to prepare them for long-term success in teaching sailing worldwide.
